In recent years I have mainly worked with the relief form. I
think of relief as an odd sibling to sculpture. It seems to exist somewhere in
the sidelines of sculptural practices, but also can appear in drawing and
painting if the pictorial plane is carried on raised surface. It is often
included, and often unremarked, in discussions concerning sculpture, even
though it clearly exists of as its own thing. It is this in-betweenness
of relief that I am interested in, and it´s possibilities for artistic
expression both through the pictorial plane and sculptural expression.
Currently I work as an associate professor both at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen, as well at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. I live and work in Bergen, Norway.

Porous Worlds (2023) PhD Artistic Reflection
Pauliina Pöllänen (b. 1983, Finland) graduated 2012 from the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo. In recent years she has exhibited at the CLAY Museum in Danmark, Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum in Sweden, Trøndelag senter for samtidskunst, Uppsala Art Museum in Sweden, Design Museum in Finland, and the Victoria & Albert Museum among other places. She lives and works in Bergen, where she recently finished her PhD in Fine Art from the University of Bergen, Faculty of Fine art, Music and Design (KMD).
